Lukas Berglund has just triumphed at the WPT Spanish Championships, after overcoming a field of 216 players over five days to take down the title, and collect the €206,000 ($294,337) first place prize.
The €3,500 buy-in tournament was held at the Casino Barcelona, and after the two starting days were completed 116 players returned for Day 2, with only 51 then making it through to Day 3. Eventually just 8 players remained with the final table then getting underway the following day.
Despite entering the final table in fourth position, the 18 year old Swedish high school student got off to the best possible start after a double elimination of Markus Ristola in 8th (€20,200) and Artur Koren in 7th (€27,000).
Artur Koren had pushed all-in from the cut-off with pocket queens and was called by Lukas Berglund with pocket sevens, before Markus Ristola then re-shoved with A-K.
However, the 7-5-10-J-3 board saw Berglund triple up while dispatching both competitors from the final table. Incredibly, Berglund then went on to eliminate every other player from the table.
The Swedes next victim was Alexander Sidorin in 6th (€33,500) holding A-5 to Berglunds pocket queens, followed by Guillem Usero in 5th (€40,000).
Next, Jorge Duffours pocket tens failed to win against Berglunds A-K and so he departed in 4th (€47,000), followed by Frederic Bussot in 3rd (€64,000) holding Kd-9d to Berglunds pocket queens.
With a formidable advantage over heads-up competitor Romain Matteoli, it then took Berglund just four hands to see off his last rival for the title.
Berglund was dealt A-6 to his opponents 8-3 with all the chips then going to the centre of the table on a 7-8-4-5 board. However, Romain Matteoli soon saw the bad news of Berglunds made straight but still went away with an impressive €64,000 for his runner-up finish.
Meanwhile, Lukas Berglund was crowned the 2011 WPT Spanish Championships and as well as becoming the youngest WPT champion in history, was also awarded a $25K seat to the upcoming WPT World Championship.
