WSOP Main Event Day 8 – The November Nine bubble

July 19th, 2011 | by Jessica Teakle |

LAS VEGAS — Despite a post-dinner break double up, Khoa Nguyen still fell short of the November Nine. The Canadian raised a Martin Staszko open, and Staszko responded with a four-bet all-in. Khoa called and was in terrible shape with 10-10 versus the K-K of the professional poker player from the Czech Republic.

Nguyen was hoping to hit a 10 or some other miracle combination, but the flop came A-2-5 and he was down to his last two cards. The turn and river came running sixes and offered him no hope, and he was eliminated in 11th place. Nguyen entered the day on pace to defend Jonathan Duhamel’s title of a year ago, but in 2011, the bracelet will not head back to Canada. Nguyen earned $607,882 in his fourth WSOP cash, the largest live score of his career.

Now, the November Nine bubble has arrived. The 10 players are all seated at one table, and the stands are filled to capacity. The one player who is eliminated will become this year’s Dean Hamrick, Jordan Smith and Brandon Steven. Endorsements, fame and exposure are on the line, and those who survive will become instant superstars.

The next four months will present expanded opportunities available only to a select group of players each year. Who will become our November Nine? Here are the chip counts of the remaining 10:

Eoghan O’Dea (40.5 million in chips) Martin Staszko (27.9 million) Ben Lamb (24.2 million) John Hewitt (19.8 million) Anton Makiievskyi (19.4 million) Phil Collins (19.4 million) Pius Heinz (16.0 million) Samuel Holden (13.1 million) Badih Bounahra (13.0 million) Matt Giannetti (9.5 million)
