2011 WSOP – Day 27: Shaking Down Ravers; November Niner Snags Bracelet

June 25th, 2011

I stood inside an elevator at the Gold Coast with Timtern and six other people; two well-roomed middle-aged tourists from the Midwest, a tweaker who hadn’t showered in days, a 300-lb whiskey tango chick in a yellow muumuu, and two raver kids dressed up for Electric Daisy Carnival.I was schwasted and tried not to laugh when Timtern rolled his eyes and jerked his head in the direction on the other side of the elevator. The raver kid wearing sunglasses and a rainbow headband was rubbing his hand back and forth against the wall of the elevator. His friend, wearing a striped tank-top eight sizes too small, happily explained to a middle-aged couple what Electric Daisy Carniival was all about.”Biggest rave on the planet. Read all post…

The King Lives! at Mardi Gras Hollywood Casino

June 24th, 2011

“Rhythm is something you either have or don’t have, but when you have it, you have it all over.”

Elvis Presley

Elvis Presley had what it took not only to be a star but for that star to never go out.  If you thought Elvis impersonators (a term not favored by them) were only in Vegas, you should have been at  Mardi Gras Casino over Memorial Day Weekend where 19 Elvis Tribute Artists (“ETA’s”) battled it out for the grand prize of $4,000 and a chance to compete in the 2011 Ultimate Elvis Tribute Artist Competition in Memphis in August.  There were local ETA’s and some from as far away as Germany, Canada, and Washington State.

Kurt Brown Productions, an ETA contest promoter with licensing rights from Elvis Presley Enterprises, ran the contest with Mardi Gras Casino, and pre-qualified 16 of the ETA’s via his internet site.  All of the ETA’s were seasoned and either perform as Elvis regularly or compete in similar competitions.  In other words, they were all really good!  There was an opportunity for walk-ins to come in and audition for a “wild card” spot.   Three of the walk-ins qualified with one ETA just missing the time cut-off.  But being a great promoter Kurt allowed him to open the show outside of the judging.

Three local celebrity judges were on hand for each round.  The competition was non-elimination so each contestant drew a number at the beginning of each round and chose their song.  The ETA could not duplicate a song that had already been chosen for the round, so luck of the draw was critical.  The contestants were judged on vocals, costuming, and overall performance with vocals weighted heaviest.  “An unqualified success from my perspective…great contestants,” said Rick Shaw, our local celebrity judge.

The top five contestants all took home prize money, with Gino Monopoly from Toronto, Canada taking first place.

Representative Joe Barton will signal the beginning of play at the World Series of Poker on Saturday, and on Friday the lawmaker gave poker players all across the country reason to believe. Rep. Barton unveiled the Internet Gambling Prohibition, Poker Consumer Protection, and Strengthening UIGEA Act of 2011.

The legislation, if approved, would call for the regulation of online poker, something that poker enthusiasts have been pushing for since the Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act was created back in 2006. Conservative ally Rep. John Campbell is a co-sponsor of the bill.

Tobey McGuire Named in High Stakes Poker Lawsuit

June 23rd, 2011

Tobey McGuire, known to most as the former Spider Man, is now making headlines for winning a bunch of money playing poker with a now imprisoned ponzi schemer.

To recoup his funds, the dastardly schemer named Brad Ruderman, is arguing that because the poker games he engaged in with McGuire were not played on legal turf, McGuire won the money illegally.

Now Ruderman wants his poker losses back hoping to use the money to pay off outstanding debts he owes when he mislead investors by using their money to rack up debts in high stakes poker games.

The high stakes games went down at pricy hotels in L.A., and now Rudermans bankruptcy trustees are claiming that McGuire, along with a plethora of other poker-playing celebrities, took Rudermans money illegally even though Ruderman was engaged in the same poker games. I
